I’m generally not not a huge fan of producing an effect in Photoshop that looks like it was produced in Photoshop. For instance when someone uses blending options like “glow” or “drop shadow” …and no other creative combination of anything else, & the effect IS the glow or drop shadow or the….. lens flare (god forbid.)

My thoughts are that after having used Photoshop since version 2.5 LE primarily for comping out web interfaces and some mild digital art, I’ve found that there are many features to help you but not do the work for you. You have to be creative and use the tools AND your own creativity to finish with a quality result. Otherwise you just look like you don’t know what you’re doing. Granted, there’s that saying “There’s nothing new under the sun” only our perspectives. So check out these tutorials and get inspired - if you have a tutorial you feel is worthy for me to add, email it to me and I’ll check it out.

This is one of the few sites I have found that actually is design well itself and also has a nice amount of quality Adobe Photoshop tutorials.

http://dr-photoshop.com/
I like the look of this site, specifically the color scheme and simplicity. The tutorials are to the point, and cover a wide range of techniques.

This site shouldn’t need any introduction if you’ve been online for any length of time, and are into digital art. They’ve been around for a while, and they’re only getting stronger. Talk about a pioneer of niche social networking! If you want to see an endless amount of amazing Photoshop digital painting tutorials - go here and type in “Photoshop tutorial” into the search bar. They have thousands of amazing user submitted tutorials.

    @What is GIMP?
most of these tutorials can be replicated in gimp, with some things with different labels.

check out Gimpshop also, a modification of gimp to be more like photoshop.

I have to say I’m all for open source software and all especially with the price of Photoshop being so high but it’s got very-very-very long way to go in overcoming the fact that most professional Photoshop users are using Macs or PCs. Let alone the fact that Linux is impossible to use for most of the population. I have to admit I really have honestly never heard of or even seen any graphics produced from GIMP so I cannot attest to it’s quality similarities with Photoshop.

Personally I run 2 computers with Windows XP and 1 with Fedora Core 6 which is basically dedicated to email and chat only and I do actually have GIMP installed installed but I don’t ever use it. I tried using it once and became totally frustrated after about 10 minutes and gave up. I know it’s not a great work ethic, but there’s a limit for instance when you can’t figure out how to do something so stupidly simple like “create a new layer” in under 5 minutes… it’s time to call it quit folks. he bottom line is Linux is just too difficult for 99% of people to figure out (myself included) how to use it and so it’s not worth the time to try and figure it out.

Honestly I spent like 3 hours trying to figure out how to get a wireless network card on a laptop running Ubuntu once. It’s absurd that it’s so difficult and I look forward to the day when it’s not and then Linux will have my attention.

Ok all that being said - I want to say additionally, I understand the heart behind GIMP and I fully support it. Even though It’s just not for me at this point I realize that it is for some people, and I want to do what I can to promote its development. So I will make a very strong attempt to put together as good a lits as possible of GIMP tutorials. If anyone would like to contribute to this effort (knows of any good places to start off hand, is interested in creating some new ones, submitting old ones, etc.) please let me know. Either email me or post whatever you have here and I’ll waste no time getting started.

It’s interesting that you feel that way about linux. I also use both Fedora and Ubuntu. Ubuntu detects my laptop’s wireless card and the rest of the hardware each time. Even the printer is detected: XP takes about two hours of fighting with different drivers to work with the printer. I use KDE, and all KDE tools, so that might be why I have such good luck with Linux.

I do agree that Gimp is not up to the level of Photoshop, though. I have no problem paying the money for Photoshop, but until it’s available for linux I’ll continue learning Gimp. Thanks.

GIMP isn’t that much different from Photoshop.. You should check your version, maybe it’s one of the older ones.

Anyway.. a good place to start looking for GIMP tutorials would be the GimpTalk forums. Just google it.

    KAT

Thanks for compiling these advanced tutorials Dennis. Many of these I’ve seen on the net before and I especially like the Photo Retouching ones as I’d been wanting to brush up on that. I nearly paid $800 to take a retouching course at Art Center a couple weeks ago and then decided I’d save the money and learn it on my own. I’m really thankful you have these tutorials as it saves me the time to search for them.

  45. gravatar

thanks for the great list, i’m going to try and re do most of these high quality tutorials using the free open source gimp :)

  46. gravatar

These are awesome. Thanks for digging them up. I’ve seen one or two of them on the web, but not the whole lot all in one convenient place! Thanks bunches! :)

  47. gravatar

    That’s very cool

Deviant art seems to be really going down hill. Most designers need creative surroundings. Creative elements are always positive, while deviant art is, even to its very name, negative/destructive. It saps inspiration which is unfortunate. The artwork is not appealing to the best and the brightest.
Hopefully they can turn it around, we’ll see.
