Product Review: Jabra JX10 Bluetooth Headset

Pros:
- Small (about 1 1/2′ x 3/4″ x 1/2″) & Lightweight (but not cheap)
- Very tight construction from high quality materials.
- Very subtle and sleek design. The metallic silver, minimal chrome accents plus the combination of glossy black accents and rubberized black controls is very appealing. Overall a great example of professional design. Also, thankfully though there is a subtle LED to indicate connection status, it isn’t an obnoxiously bright blue LED light like those expensive Motorola headsets.
- Extremely clear call quality on both ends when speaking at normal volume. It’s a very nice to not have to worry about sounding like a jerk to the other person with any “tunnel effect” or echoes or any other distortion.
- Voice commands work pretty well. Sometimes, if I say, “Call Dad” it says, “did you say, Call Matt?” but for the most part it’s pretty accurate and just connects me or asks which number to connect to (mobile, home, work, etc.) if I have more than one number listed.
Cons:
- Sound gets distorted when phone and ear piece are increased to higher volumes = hard to hear in noisy areas due to not being able to increase the volume because of the audio distortion that happens when you do so.
- Talking in a windy area causes recipient’s call quality to decline dramatically.
- I’ve found that sometimes after having disconnected the headset through my phone’s internal bluetooth manager, my bluetooth kicks on mid-conversation. So I have to keep manually turning it off and telling the person that I didn’t hear what they just said.
- The ear clip broke about 2 weeks into having it. The core is apparently made out of plastic (no metal core) and being that it’s very thin, it bent at the base hard enough to break off when I tried to bend it back. Thankfully the headset is so light and the ear piece fits so snug in my ear that I don’t actually need the ear clip anymore. I never really liked using it anyways, now I just pop it right into my ear and it sticks, although…
- …the rubber around the ear piece sometimes slides either too far over or completely off the microphone when the headset is in my pocket. It is definitely permanently stretched in a few areas at this point, but is still staying on alright. I have started taking it to/from my pocket more carefully.
Summary:
I was very very detailed about the little things that bothered me in this review. I personally got a really great deal ($59 - Comp USA going out of business sale) on this Jabra JX10 bluetooth headset but for the people who actually paid full price for this thing ($179), the little things might be enough to tick you off.
Overall, the call quality is ridiculously good. It took me a little while getting used to speaking into it at the right volume and how to set the volume right, etc., but I am very very satisfied with it at this point.
I still don’t have a ear clip which I love because it’s so much easier not to use it. I imagine there will be bluetooth headsets in the future which specifically don’t use the clip (if there aren’t already). If you need the clip (because you use your headset on a roller coaster or motorcycle or something) I’m sure you can always find one for a couple bucks at a Best Buy or something. An interesting point about the clip issue is that by boss just bought a Jawbone headset a couple months ago because they were supposed to be the next best thing, and I asked him about his clip. He said he’s broken his four times so far! He also uses his about 2,000 minutes a month though so it makes sense in some way.
Specifically in comparison to the Jawbone headset, I would say that the receiver’s call quality is a little bit lower when the caller is using a Jawbone than when using the JX10 - BUT the noise cancellation ability of the headset is a lot better than the JX10. Basically if anything is happening around you (a bird chirping in a tree across the street for example) your call recipient will clearly hear it.
Despite the little problems I pointed out, my biggest challenge with this headset so far has been to figure out how to tactfully motion to friends and coworkers I wasn’t talking to them while mid-conversation with someone else because they can’t see the tiny headset I’m using.
I give this product a thumbs up.
