Here are two services which offer heat-mapping services for  your websites at a variety of price ranges. I have been using Crazyegg.com now for several months on multiple projects and since there was no other comprable service that I was aware of, it suited my needs, though apparently now there are others, such as ClickTwist.com as pointed out by Mark (thanks Mark!) which I will have to give a try.

A quick critique on CrazyEgg thus far is that it is getting progressively slower and slower to load but that’s about it so far. It’s very easy to set up and the reporting is pretty near real time and very accurate. Also they have a new feature called “Confetti” which breaks down your visitors into groups based on where they came from, and will show those clicks as different colors.

I haven’t noticed any specific patterns from people coming from one place or the other but you could use it to your advantage if you were doing a specific marketing campaign which highlighted a few specific features which you could then track and find out if people coming from that ad/banner/source/etc. were actually clicking on those features you highlighted. Just a thought.
